Earthing protects people first, equipment second
A correctly earthed system gives fault current a safe path to ground instead of through a person who touches a faulty appliance or exposed conductive part. This is the primary reason earthing is a safety requirement on any property.
Poor earthing often shows up as damaged equipment
Recurring, unexplained damage to electronics or appliances, especially after storms, is a common symptom of inadequate earthing or missing surge protection, not always a sign of a bad appliance. This is easy to misdiagnose without testing the earthing system itself.
Lightning protection is a separate system from earthing
A building’s earthing system and a dedicated lightning protection system (air terminals, down conductors, and a proper strike-current path to ground) work together but aren’t the same thing. Exposed or elevated structures, or buildings with a history of storm-related damage, need the dedicated system assessed on its own. Standard earthing doesn’t cover it.
Testing is what turns "installed" into "working"
An earth electrode that was correctly installed years ago can still fail an earth loop impedance test today. Soil conditions and connections change over time, and only periodic testing confirms the system still does its job.
