Choosing the Right Solar Battery for Home Backup in Nigeria

There is no single "best" battery - the right chemistry and capacity depend on how you actually plan to use backup power.

Chemistry matters more than the brand name on the label

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries dominate new residential installs for good reason: deeper usable depth-of-discharge, longer cycle life, and no regular maintenance, which matters when a battery bank is cycling daily rather than sitting idle between rare outages.

Lead-acid (flooded or AGM/gel) is still specified occasionally where upfront cost is the overriding constraint and cycling is infrequent, but it typically needs a shallower depth-of-discharge to reach a comparable lifespan, which usually means buying more capacity than a lithium bank would need to deliver the same usable backup.

Duty cycle decides the spec, not the other way around

A battery bank that only carries a handful of circuits during occasional grid outages has a very different duty cycle than one cycling daily to offset generator hours or grid unreliability. The first tolerates a smaller, less frequently cycled bank; the second needs capacity and a chemistry rated for daily deep cycling without a fast capacity drop-off.

Deciding which of these you actually need, before comparing battery models, is what makes a spec comparison meaningful instead of arbitrary.

Usable capacity is not the number on the box

A battery's rated capacity and its usable capacity are different figures - depth-of-discharge limits, round-trip efficiency losses, and temperature derating in Nigeria's ambient heat all reduce what you actually get to draw on. Comparing battery options on rated capacity alone, without accounting for these, overstates how much backup you're actually buying.

The battery is one part of a system, not an isolated purchase

A battery sized in isolation from the inverter's charging rate and the panel array's recharge capacity for your usage pattern creates a mismatch - a bank that can't recharge within the available daylight hours before the next outage isn't doing its job, regardless of how good the battery itself is.
