How to Compare Electrical Quotes Like for Like

Two quotes for the same job can differ by a lot, and the cheaper one is not always the better deal. These are the questions that make quotes comparable.

Engineer reviewing technical documentation

Start with the scope, not the total

A total only means something if the scope behind it is the same. Check that each quote covers the same circuits, equipment and areas, and that nothing you expect has been left out or quietly priced as an extra.

Ask what is based on measurement

A quote built on a site assessment and measured load is more reliable than one built on an assumption. Ask how the sizing was arrived at and whether the cables, protective devices and any solar or battery capacity were sized from the actual load.

Check what you receive at the end

Ask which records come with the job: test results, circuit schedules, as-built information and handover documentation. Our guide on what you should receive at the end of an electrical project lists the usual ones.

Look at the people and the process

Ask who will do the work, how it is supervised, how testing is handled and what happens if something needs correcting afterwards. A clear answer is a good sign.
